Seniors from Belle Glade, Pahokee & South Bay
(West Palm Beach, FL – February 6, 2023): “Experience the Magic of Cinema” is the slogan of a major new cultural event: The Donald M. Ephraim Palm Beach Film Festival© Presented by MorseLife, which is currently screening unique 50+ world-class features, documentaries and short films at seven local theaters through Feb. 16.
As part of its original commitment to offer films that “foster dialogue and interaction among our attendees and supporters” while collaborating with “community partners (and) diverse populations,” the Festival donated 100 free tickets to senior citizens from western Palm Beach County (Belle Glade, Pahokee, and South Bay) to the Florida Premiere of an award-winning documentary: LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER

In 1960, Lowndes County, AL, was a rural, impoverished town with a vicious history of racist terrorism. Eighty percent Black with no Black voters, the county served as a launching pad for a movement that brought together men and women, Black and White, the quiet warriors, and the crusaders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), among others. The screening took place Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Regal Royal Palm Beach.
The organization Guardians of the Glades worked with the Parks & Recreation Departments at each municipality so that the seniors enrolled in their program could attend, as well as seniors from the local independent living facilities. Participants in a very active Foster Grandparents Program that works in the schools will also be attending.
“I’m just so happy that our living Legends, which is how I describe our seniors, have this opportunity available to them, especially during Black History Month,” says Tammy Jackson-Moore of Guardians of the Glades, expressing her appreciation to The Donald M. Ephraim Palm Beach Film Festival for its generosity. “If we can keep our Legends engaged, we can accomplish a lot in the local community, and it allows them to an opportunity to get out and continue to live a healthy life.”
LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER will also be shown on Thursday, Feb. 9, 4 p.m., at the Paragon Theaters in the Delray Marketplace.Tickets to The Donald M.
